Executive Editor, Edutopia

The George Lucas Educational Foundation seeks an executive editor, who reports to the editorial director and is accountable for directing the day-to-day editorial operations for Edutopia.org and Edutopia magazine. In collaboration with the editorial director and Edutopia video's executive producer, the executive editor determines the editorial voice for Edutopia, including the look and feel. The successful candidate will also work closely with the managing editor to develop and maintain a cross-platform editorial schedule. This is a full-time, benefited position. The job location is near San Rafael.

Responsibilities:

  • Guide a six-person editorial team and multiple freelancers (staff and contributing editors, writers, and multimedia producers, as well as volunteer bloggers and contract copy editors and fact-checkers) to produce high-quality reporting, analysis, and actionable how-to tips/resources about promising educational reforms.
  • In collaboration with the managing editor, establish and maintain an editorial calendar that delivers thoughtful, topical coverage of the most important issues tied to Edutopia's agenda, step back to analyze trends and connections, and monitor deadlines and production schedules.
  • In collaboration with the editorial director and the executive producer, develop and implement new uses for multimedia formats and new ways to use integrated media to inspire and inform the Edutopia community.
  • Work with the senior editorial team and the editorial steering committee to strengthen the quality of current media and expand Edutopia's reputation as a trusted source for the best ideas of what works in public education.
  • Manage strategic and complex content projects.
  • Manage and motivate staff and develop key talent.
  • Identify and recruit freelancers to development new content.
  • Work with internal marketing, sales, and membership peers to build and maintain relationships with outside organizations that expand Edutopia's reach and impact.
  • Manage the print and Web budget.
  • Continue to develop professional skills.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Experience, Skills, and Education:

  • Eight or more years of editorial experience, including work in online media; a background in multiplatform story delivery (print, Web, video) is an advantage.
  • Experience leading a diverse and talented team of staff and freelancers.
  • Highly organized, with attention to detail and ability to multitask and thrive under multiple deadlines.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills.
  • Proactive, collaborative, and creative.
  • A solid understanding of K-12 education in school, home, and community contexts.
  • A strong personal or professional interest in bettering public education.
  • Bachelor’s degree.
