Student comfort

I am surprised at how we treat our students with respect to their comfort during any break- either lunch or recess. As teachers we can be assured of a warm or cool drink and a seat if we desire. There is not the same availability of comfort for students especially in secondary school settings.

I recently visited a school where such provision was made for students in years 10-11-12.They have their own kitchens ( food preparation areas) which includes microwaves, toasters, kettles, sinks - seating based on a house system of responsibility for tidiness.
In Australia many of our students work after school at age 14 + which means they may work 4.00- midnight on week nights and all day Saturday and Sunday and there is not provison of adult facilities of comfort and warmth made for these students- who ssentially lead adult lives.
