I would love to hear your discoveries and thoughts on this topic. I have found that some are helped and others overstimulated by the music. Those close to the source are happiest and others always wanting it to be louder because they can't hear it. So volume, choice of music, and whether or not some are more distracted are all questions for me when it comes to background music in the classroom.
